1889-1913

Menelik II was born on August 17, 1844 in Ankober, Shewa, Ethiopia. He was king of Shewa and emperor of Ethiopia (1889–1913). One of Ethiopia’s greatest rulers,New capital founded in Addis Ababa
He commissioned first modern hospitals and schools, constructed railroad, modern bank, stamps and currency – he did this in order to maintain independence
Defeat Italy in the Battle of Adwa -1896
His conquests allowed the expansion of Ethiopia
He succeeded in removing the last Muslim emir ( a commander/ruler) from Ethiopia
Menelik II is the actual founder of modern Ethiopia.He thought only Russia could be the main ally of his policy of centralisation of territories under Shewan central government by reason of necessity to counteract the British colonial expansion, starting with the war against the British (1868 Expedition to Abyssinia, theft of Kebra Nagast and death of Tewodros II)  Menelek focused much of his energy on development and modernization of his country ;He died in 1913.
